WeDo 2.0 app discontinued: timeline and options
Yes, the LEGO WeDo 2.0 app is discontinued. LEGO Education retired it in January 2024, the store listings said it would stay available until 31 July 2026, and it gets no further updates. Installed copies keep working, and your kits still work with other apps.

What still works
Your hardware and any installed copy of the app still work; what is gone is new downloads, updates and support.
-
Your kits
WeDo 2.0 Smarthubs, motors and sensors keep working with any compatible app.
-
Installed copies of the app
LEGO's general policy for retired apps is that you can keep using a copy you already downloaded, without support. Each OS update is a risk.
-
Built-in project content
LEGO says the project content is built into the app, so it works offline. The in-app Teacher Guide needs internet; LEGO suggests downloading the PDFs.
-
Teacher guides and curriculum PDFs
LEGO still hosts the WeDo 2.0 teacher guides and curriculum on its retired-products pages.
-
Sideloaded APKs, with caution
Old Android packages circulate on APK sites. They are unverified and usually cannot be deployed through school device management.
Your options
You have three realistic options: keep the installed app while it lasts, switch to a maintained app such as RoboGuru, or use a free tool such as Scratch 3.
-
Keep using the installed app
Free and familiar, but there are no updates, no support and nothing to reinstall on new or reset devices.
-
Switch to RoboGuru for WeDo 2.0
An independent app that installs on iPhone & iPad, Android, Web editor, Windows, macOS, and Linux and works with the Smarthub you own.
-
Use Scratch 3 with Scratch Link
Free and well known. Needs Scratch Link on Windows and Mac, and does not work on iPads or Linux.
Questions about the discontinued app
What happened to the LEGO WeDo 2.0 app?
LEGO Education retired it. The store listings said the app would remain available until 31 July 2026, and it no longer gets updates or support. Copies already installed may keep working until an operating-system update breaks them.
Do my WeDo 2.0 kits still work?
Yes. The Smarthub, motors and sensors are fine. You just need software that can talk to them, such as RoboGuru for WeDo 2.0 or Scratch 3.
Does the official WeDo 2.0 app still work?
Copies that are already installed usually keep working, but LEGO no longer supports or updates them. Each new iOS, Android, Windows or macOS release can break the app, and a new or reset device cannot get it back once the store listing is gone.
Is it safe to install the old WeDo 2.0 APK?
Be careful. Copies on APK download sites are unverified, they get no updates, and schools usually cannot install them through device management. A maintained app from an official store is the safer choice.
Should I buy SPIKE Essential instead?
That is no longer an option: LEGO stopped selling the whole SPIKE range on 30 June 2026. Its successor, LEGO Education Computer Science & AI, means buying new kits for every group.
Where can I find the WeDo 2.0 lesson plans?
LEGO still hosts the original WeDo 2.0 teacher guides and curriculum as PDFs on the retired-products pages of the LEGO Education website.
